Rise North East is launching a virtual learning course for young people.

The aim of the Rise Leadership & Volunteering Programme is to recruit, develop and deploy volunteers aged 13-25 to assist with the delivery of sporting events, and to support other young people to be active by creating and encouraging physical activity in their school or community.

Rise is reaching out directly to young people to enrol on the programme, and asking teachers, parents, coaches, and carers to put forward anyone they think may be interested or will benefit from taking part.

Amy Scott, Children and Young People Development Officer at Rise, said: “Schools and community organisations play an important role in getting more young people active and it’s often at these places where physical activity habits are first created. Leadership and volunteering provide young people with important life skills such as communication and organisation, as well as increasing confidence and employability.

“We’re really pleased to be working closely with the Youth Sport Trust’s Young Coach Academy, to ensure young people across Northumberland and Tyne & Wear have the opportunities to develop their leadership and coaching skills.”

The programme will be delivered by knowledgeable and experienced coaches and athletes - consisting of a series of pre-recorded online sessions - and will go live each month from February, concluding with a celebration event in the summer months.

The first two sessions entitled ‘start of the journey’ and ‘understanding the participants’, will be premiered via the Rise Youtube channel in February and will be presented by Commonwealth Games Gold medal-winning gymnast, Craig Heap. Young people taking part will be sent links to the videos each month.

There will also be a range of additional CPD sessions, providing the young people with further knowledge to support their learning from the online sessions.
